Besides writing and illustrating successful children’s books, Wolf Erlbruch has illustrated various literary texts of such authors as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Karl Philipp Moritz.
Gottfried Benn’s expressionist poem Schöne Jugend (The Splendour of Youth) inspired him to create a typology of rats, in colour and not devoid of irony. A masterly composition of drawings and collage, this slim volume is a rather unusual artist’s book.
Wolf Erlbruch, born in 1948, studied graphic design and worked as an illustrator in advertising. Towards the end of the 1980s he began to write and illustrate children’s books. He is now a professor at Wuppertal’s Bergische Universität. His numerous awards include the Sonderpreis des Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreises, the Hans Christian Andersen-Preis, and the Gutenbergpreis of the City of Leipzig, a lifetime achievement award.
