The author

Fulvio Tomizza (1935-1999) was an Italian writer who wrote plays and children's books in addition to novels and short stories. He was born in 1935 in Materada (Istria) and moved to Trieste in 1954, when his homeland became Yugoslavian, where he lived until his death. Tomizza has received many important Italian literary prizes and the Austrian State Prize for European Literature.

The illustrator

Axel Scheffler, born in 1957, studied art history in Hamburg and studied graphic design with Bath in Corsham, England from 1982 to 1985. In addition to picture book illustrations, he also draws for magazines and journals as well as for advertising. Today Axel Scheffler is one of the most important children's and young people's book illustrators worldwide. He lives with his family in London.
